Mama's review -
So, this is just beginning and we’ve already gone against what we sought out to do in the first place – discover good breakfast joints. This week we went to the much hyped and well patronized Blue Moon Café (http://bluemoonbaltimore.com/) as the second stop on our tour. These are the three main reasons we were led astray:
Corrina convincingly claimed, “come on Mom, I just have to get it out of my system!”
The initial pick, Morning Edition Café (on Patterson), has sadly closed its doors.
The cinnamon roll.
All that being said, we certainly don’t want this project to become too rules-y as that isn’t any fun. Besides, I can personally guarantee our next stop will be at least less ‘heard of.’ And definitely less caloric. The trouble with Blue Moon is that it’s super hard to avoid over eating. They do both the sweet (captain crunch french toast and the aforementioned cinnamon roll) and the savory (chorizo eggs) quite well, so of course one is inclined to order both.
The simple gift of frequent water and coffee refills mustn't go unmentioned. It pleases me greatly and while it may seem like a small thing, the comfort of knowing I should never run out of either water or coffee during the course of my meal only adds to the delight of my overall dining experience. Plus no assumptions were made that I wanted a lemon in my water, score.
The food is generous, unique, but still traditionally breakfast. The hash browns, for example, are delightful and somewhat of a gem as most places have shifted to the breakfast potato. These are classic with the crusty bit on top. I appreciate that it’s acquired attention from the likes of Guy Fieri yet remains humble. The walls are adorned with local art and the space is small and cozy.
We did witness perhaps a meeting of the minds while we were there, not to spread rumors or anything, but it looked like the owner (Sarah Simington who opened the restaurant with her mother, just saying) was talking to contractor types … expansion? Who knows. What we do know is we’ll always return to this little Charm City gem, even when we’re trying not to!
